The Benefits of Using Pre-wired Cables

May 17th, 2010 Andrew Zanelli No comments

In today’s production atmosphere, cost, time and efficiency while implementing quality processes determine the bottom-line success and profitability of your product. A tried and true way to accomplish a piece of this goal is to use quality pre-engineered and wired cables.

Among the many benefits are:

  1. Design Flexibility – Using pre-wired cables in your project from the design stage on, allows the Engineer greater flexibility in a number of aspects. Panel space is always at a premium and a great way to conserve space is to install pre-wired cables. It reduces the need for wire trays and permits greater variety in the placement of PCB’s and other components as cable routing becomes less inhibited.
  2. Reduced Wiring Time and Costs – The amount of time needed to wire your cabinet or machine is reduced as connecting cables is a much quicker process than routing the cables, making a connections and labeling each wire and termination point. The number of wiring errors will also diminish, as fewer opportunities for a wiring mistake are present.
  3. Easier Marking and Labeling – Pre-wired cables will arrive labeled and with diagrams declaring each connection point. The assembler is then left with verifying the points of connection and labeling the cabinet for clear and correct assembly.
  4. Faster Testing and Replacement Times – The testing of cabinets with pre-wired cable assemblies is a more efficient process than cabinets with individual connections. The tester can easily check for continuity and signal presence without disconnecting the cable. If repair is needed or a function added or changed, a pre-wired cable is much more flexible. Your service provider can show up with a new cable and complete replacement in a matter or minutes resulting in less downtime for the client and a shorter visit for the provider.
  5. Fewer Parts, Less Inventory – Use the space that used to store multiple cable components to increase production area as pre-wired cables can take less than half the space. Reduced inventory and increased space will raise your profit levels.
  6. Quality Panels – Let your company be known by the caliber of your panels. Pre-wired cabling means your applications will be neater and safer than individually routing each termination point.

Caliper Life Science selects VCC Custom Interconnectors

May 4th, 2010 Mark Baker No comments

In the growing demand for quick lab results, Caliper Life Science diagnostics group selects VCC Custom LED interconnect to help with the indication demands required to meet FDA regulations.  The desire was to quickly and efficiently retrofit a current product to meet the new demands.

“The idea was to use a pre-existing product platform and change the front cover. We needed a way to bring the indication to the new cover without having to rewire the existing platform. The intention was to make a less expensive product but still have the options of allowing for future upgrades.” Said Shawn Allen head mechanical engineer.  “Because of VCC’s vast array of products and configurations and their knowledgeable customer service it was a simple and easy process for us.”

The CNX series offers an easy solution when a demand arises where the indicator needs to be mounted to a front panel. Since connection lengths vary widely, this series can be ordered in standard or custom lengths and arrive at your facility pre-wired with the required connection length for the application.  No tools for assembly are needed. You can order your interconnect with the type of termination needed for the specific application as well. VCC provides you with the option to use a header connector, stripped, bare wires, terminal attachments or arrange to have this component soldered directly to your circuit board.  The CNX series of interconnects have been modified to resolve panel pushback issues and will withstand high levels of vibration, making them the perfect product for retrofit applications where secure fit can be an issue. The CNX series gives you flexibility, durability and ease of implementation that are needed in both your new and retrofit projects.  To learn more about VCC Interconnects please visit our web-site at www.vcclite.com.

Philips Medical Selects VCC for New Series of CT Scanners

The use of the HMC 461 CTP lens with a 10mm VCC LED provides for optimal brightness and a wide viewing angle, which makes the lens easily viewed in a bright room. The lens and LED were combined with the CNX 460 LED cable assembly.

VCC’s solution functions as a status indicator for the patient who is being scanned. The patient is instructed to look at the indicator and not to move until the light is off. In Philips’ design stage, it was important to find a lens that was large enough for the patient to easily view, but it also needed to be aesthetic appealing. The HMC 461 CTP met the all of these requirements.

Disneyland Resort’s operations group recently chose VCC to replace costly incandescent lamps in the FASTPASS system. Park engineers selected our C connector with one of our powerful 5mm white LEDs (MouserCDI, Newark) which extends from a PC board up to the viewing panel. For driving the assembly, engineers decided on another VCC product, our power module. It converts AC current to usable DC current and has an extremely small footprint, which is unique given the alternatives currently in the marketplace.

Providing LED Cable Assemblies for Electric Vehicles

Recently, VCC was introduced to AC Propulsion of San Dimas, CA. AC Propulsion supplies electric propulsion and battery technology for electric vehicles. Most notably, they have contracted with BMW to provide systems for the BMW MINI E electric vehicle. The AC Propulsion drive system includes a power electronics unit and AC-induction traction motor featuring proprietary and patented tzero™ technology to provide high performance, high efficiency, and rapid, convenient charging capabilities for electric vehicle applications.

AC Propulsion designed-in a modified version of VCC’s CNX 440 threaded cable assembly  with a CMS 442 lens to be used as a warning indicator in the event the electric motor or battery unit overheat. What attracted them to the VCC product was its NEMA 4 rating for moisture, as well as VCC’s ability to customize it for the application.

VCC takes its environmental responsibility seriously, and we feel quite good knowing that our products in this project and many others like it are helping us follow-through on our committments.

About AC Propulsion:

AC Propulsion is a California corporation founded in 1992 by Alan Cocconi to develop and commercialize advanced propulsion for a new type of vehicle — efficient but powerful, zero-emission but fun to drive, gasoline-free but convenient to use — the electric vehicle. The world needs electric vehicles to provide transportation without petroleum. Our propulsion systems — motors, inverters, chargers, and batteries — make electric vehicles efficient, fast, and fun to drive. We are working with automakers, large and small, around the world, who want to build such vehicles.
