VCC Lights Up MOON International

March 1st, 2011 No comments

For 40 years, Moon International has been envisioning, creating and implementing original and productive retail spaces. Their team of innovative designers is always looking for new and more efficient ways to backlight their beautiful signs. They know that LED lighting is more than just a trend – LEDs use a considerably smaller amount of power to output light, and last far longer than conventional bulbs, even compact fluorescents which is very important in the retail grocery trade they serve. In addition, their small and flexible shapes allow for a wider range of applications than could normally be achieved with other forms of lighting.

Newark’s Greg Fell had been calling on Moon for a number of years, so, when an opportunity came up for LEDs, Greg helped them choose VCC for their interior cabinet lighting project. They selected VCC’s one watt starboard LED with heat sink. VCC unique method of light delivery options helped provide a suitable solution for a complicated design.

MOON’s customer required a multiple of LED’s wired together to back light a display cabinet, with little
ventilation. VCC all in one LED and heat sink package made MOON’s design become reality, requiring just soldering the LED to the Starboard heat sink and then using double sided tape gave an easy functional solution for MOON. VCC starboard 1Watt LED’s are available in multiple colors.

North Shore Safety Chooses VCC for Stringent Environmental Needs

October 18th, 2010 No comments

North Shore Safety is a leader in the development of electrical safety products for diverse and custom applications.  In a recent project, North Shore Safety units were implemented into the public charging stations for electric cars. This application required that the device perform as an in-line fault detector to prevent electric shock or fire in the case of a short circuit. The units effectively operate as inline isolators between the car and the charging station. If circumstances were to occur that resulted in a charging station malfunction, the North Shores Line Guard will terminate all current flow to the vehicle.  Designed to meet extreme conditions reliably; this is an industrial grade ground fault circuit interrupter that is a “Go Anywhere” protection device.

VCC has been a leader in LED panel indication for years so when North Shore Electric needed an indicator for this device that could function under extreme conditions, they turned to VCC.  This device had to meet stringent NEMA 4X ratings, as the design parameters required this device to be outdoors, impact resistant and also able to withstand exposure to chemical elements.

North Shore investigated their options thoroughly and chose the VCC lens products as the best solution with proven testing results to meet and exceed project requirements. VCC Lenses are UV resistant, meet NEMA 4X ratings and offer Fresnel rings that increase the discernable brightness of LED devices. This option was an important feature because if an error occurs, it will be indicated by the LED. This means the LED must capture the users attention and must be viewable in a variety of conditions, including direct sunlight.  Dave Futkos, President of North Shore Safety, estimates the number of units needed to supply demand will be close to 1 million, as each electric car dealer will need a charging station in addition to each consumer who purchases an electric vehicle.

VCC was thrilled to provide our panel lenses to meet the challenges of this project and look forward to a long lasting relationship with North Shore Safety. Contact VCC today for more information about our line of products to meet your most stringent application requirements.

Add Brilliance to Your Gaming

September 16th, 2010 No comments

Video gaming today isn’t about gathering a pocketful of quarters and heading down to the local strip-mall or neighborhood arcade. What was once state-of-the-art video based gaming such as motorcycle and car racing games, sniper shoot-outs and alien wars are now as old and obsolete as the word processor stored on the closet shelf collecting dust.

In today’s gaming world, dedicated gamers no longer need to leave the comfort of home to experience the best graphics and special effects that could once only be enjoyed in an arcade. The advances in video gaming have resulted in an extensive variety of compact controllers and systems that can be run from your own living room. The number of different consoles, the myriad of different games & the endless variations of what was once called a joystick and is now known as a “gaming controller” can leave one bewildered trying to decide which gaming platform to use.

The current ruler of the gaming universe is the XBox 360 gaming system. Not only are the graphics and video special effects superior but XBox 360 also allows the user to ‘go-live’ and play with other gamers around the world.

VCC has had the pleasure of working with a company called Viking360 that manufactures a USB programmable controller with downloadable updates for the XBox 360 gaming system. Their love of gaming led to the development of a ‘Rapid-fire’ chip that is used in the modified gaming controllers offered in their product line. You can improve your sniper skills, make one-shot drops, reload your weapon faster and essentially turn any one-shot gun into a rapid-fire machine gun that leaves the competition stunned. There are a plethora of mod-shops available but Viking 360 has the dedication, quality and love of gaming that has kept them at the forefront and led to innovative developments that are unavailable elsewhere.

Einar Offerdahl III is the owner and operator of Viking 360. After receiving his electrical engineering degree, he blended his knowledge and passion for gaming into developing new ways to improve the interface and controls of his favorite gaming system.  Recently, when faced with a NEW gaming controller design that will use 4 RGB LED’s per gaming module, he had concerns over cost, space and power consumption.

Einer’s research led him to choose the RGB LED’s made by VCC Optoelectronics, p/n VAOL-S19337RGB. As he told us, “This LED is much smaller than most of the LED’s I considered and seemed to lay down flatter when mounted on the PCB. After further review, the VCC LED’s were indeed lower power and less expensive than the others which made my choice to use VCC Optoelectronics RGB LED’s quite simple. Thanks to the support and service thru VCC and one of their Distributors, I will be using their parts in my latest design scheduled to go into production this quarter.”

VCC Optoelectronics has an LED to meet your needs also; whether it is compact design, low power consumption, superior brightness, cost or delivery, we are here to assist your selection and exceed your expectations. Contact VCC today to get your project started.

VCC Takes to the Airwaves with REMEC Broadband Wireless

August 18th, 2010 No comments

High on hills and in mountaintops where reception is the strongest and clearest is where you will find REMEC equipment operating. REMEC provides high-powered, reliable integrated microwave and millimeter wave subsystem solutions for the telecommunications market. Among the products offered by REMEC is an Outdoor Unit to enhance communications and signal processing. The current Outdoor Units offered by REMEC are the only ‘off-the-shelf’ commercial products that are successfully implemented in over 250,000 locations.

Looking to improve the point-to-point and point-to-multi-point signaling for cellular phone call connections to local sites, REMEC designed a power indicator that could be used in conjunction with its line of Outdoor Units.  The visual indicator would have to withstand the kinds of outdoor conditions that can only be delivered by Mother Nature and still equal the reliability of other REMEC products.  After careful deliberation, REMEC selected the VCC LCS series of light pipes to meet this design demand.  The VCC LCS series is a moisturized NEMA certified light pipe that provides a seal against water, dust and ice conditions

About VCC Light Pipes

VCC light pipes are specially formulated UV resistant lens permits the light pipe to provide optimal visual clarity in direct sunlight. The entire line of VCC light pipes increaseefficiency and conserve maintenance time since there’s no physical connection between the PCB board and mounting panel. This permits the PCB to be serviced without requiring a mechanical disconnect.  The 6 different lengths and colors open the field of communication, space and environmental possibilities when designing new, innovative products.

More about the LCS Series Light Pipe

LCS is used for transmitting light from a PCB mounted LED to the front panel while providing protection from the outside environment limiting the chance of water or dust entering the electronic enclosure and not only meeting but surpassing the IP 67/ NEMA 6P requirements. LCS can be used with 5mm, 3mm or surface mount lenses that retain enough clarity to capture outside light and bring it into a photo diode receptor. When light output, clarity, performance and environmental protection are required, the LCS series is a product that should be considered for highly reliable, flexible and successful indication. Contact VCC today and our team will collaborate with you to find the best light pipe solution for your design.

Helping Increase Solar Power Efficiency

National Semiconductor has chosen the VCC LCS Series lens/light pipe for its Solar Magic™ project. Solar Magic™ power optimizers are the perfect solution for maximizing the energy harvest of solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays affected by real world conditions. Solar PV arrays are susceptible to large amounts of energy loss from small amounts of shade caused by light barriers like trees, roof obstructions, and debris. In addition, solar arrays require installation with a single orientation and tilt to avoid array mismatch energy loss. SolarMagic™ power optimizers reclaim up to 50% of the energy lost to real world shade and mismatch conditions and enable flexible design installation.

Solar Magic Unit with LCS

During the product design phase, the National Semiconductor engineers realized that they needed an effective water-tight panel solution for the indicator LED being used in the power optimizer. Enter the VCC LCS Series.

The LCS Series was developed to provide moisture sealing and dust control for display panels when the LED is attached to a circuit board. The light pipe component is tubular in shape attached to a low-profile lens. The lens is diffused with Fresnel rings in order to provide a 180 degree viewing angle. The light pipes are molded from an optical grade acrylic plastic for clarity and optimum light transmission. The light pipe tooling is highly polished, to provide a smooth, scratch-free surface to the finished light pipe. This produces an optimum surface for maximum light refraction and ultimate light transmission.

vcc_2007_catalog_low_res-241

Tests by an independent testing laboratory have shown that the LCS unit meets NEMA 4 requirements for providing an effective seal against water, ice, and dust. In addition to the water tests, the unit and its retaining system have been tested up to 6Gs of shock and from 0 to 2000 Hz of vibration. Tests also included storage and operating temperature ((-40°C to +85°C), solar, ice and UV). The conclusion attained upon completion of these tests was that the LCS Series exceeded all test criteria.

When not choosing the patented LCS Series as an effective solution, the moisture sealing of a light pipe to a display panel requires the use of RTV-type adhesive. When applying glue for sealing, special precautions must be taken to avoid creating air gaps that would allow sealed joints to leak. Glues are not only difficult to apply but their adhesion to a light pipe surface will change the flow of the light pattern. This will also cause light leakage, which results in the reduction of light emitted by the litepipe. This gluing method will surely result in serious assembly problems and less than satisfactory panel displays, both of which were unacceptable to National Semiconductor for the Solar Magic™ project.
